Colin Powell announced this morning he will again vote for President Obama, handing the president a rare endorsement from across the aisle and taking a few shots at Mitt Romney in the process.
“I’m not quite sure which Governor Romney we would be getting with respect to foreign policy,” the former secretary of state said on CBS’s This Morning. “I don’t sense he’s thought through these issues as thoroughly as he should have. He gets advice from his campaign staff that he then has to modify as he goes along.”
The former George W. Bush appointee also backed Obama in 2008, ruffling a few feathers in his own party in the process by hailing the then first-term senator as a “transformational figure who represented generational change.” Asked this summer who he would back this time, however, and Powell said he was going to wait and see what Romney had to offer.
“I think I’m a Republican of more moderate mold and that’s something of a dying breed, I’m sorry to say,” he said today. “But, you know, the Republicans I worked for are President Reagan, President Bush 41, the Howard Bakers of the world, people who were conservative, people who were willing to push their conservative views, but people who recognize that at the end of the day you got to find a basis for compromise. Compromise is how this country runs.”
