A Yemeni security official working for the U.S. embassy was shot dead on Thursday. The official was part of the team investigating an embassy attack in Yemen.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack that killed Qassem Aqlan, who’d worked for the embassy for more than a decade, but it looks a lot like previous attacks by the al-Qaida offshoot in Yemen.
CNN explains:
Gunmen on a motorcycle shot at the vehicle Aqlan was in. He died at the scene, the Interior Ministry officials said. “Motorcycle attacks are currently al Qaeda’s main tactic,” a senior Interior Ministry official said, adding that such attacks “are easier for terrorists to coordinate and plan for.”
According to CBS News, the official was technically off-duty at the time of the shooting. He was on his way to work, heading from his home in western Sanaa to the embassy in the eastern part of the city.
