Annals of National Defense, Part II: Shin-Soo Choo Beats Taiwan, the Draft

Playing for South Korea’s national honor—and for an exemption from his impending two-year military service commitment—Cleveland Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo drove in two runs today in a 9-3 victory over Taiwan , winning a gold medal in the Asian Games.

Reuters quoted Choo’s postgame remarks:

“I will now be able to focus strictly on baseball. A lot of fans and players have been concerned about my future and that led to great results here. It is an honor to wear the national flag and win the gold medal for my country.”

Overall in the tournament, Choo ended up batting .517 with three home runs and a .700 on-base percentage.
