The Tribune Washington bureau captures what might as well have been the
in the (non-sworn) “testimony” delivered by “Stephen Colbert” before the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on immigration, as Rep. Lamar Smith grilled the “witness”:
Would Colbert support the notion of requiring all bills be posted online for 72 hours before a vote?
“I endorse all Republican policies without question,” Colbert deadpanned.
“Thank you for your endorsement of the pledge for America,” Smith gleefully responded, referring to the GOP’s fresh governing blueprint issued this week.
Once upon a time, a hundred years ago, Ali G. had to go to the trouble of fooling people into thinking he was sincere to get them to play along with his stunt interviews. Now sincerity doesn’t even work as a meaningful framing device. Lamar Smith doesn’t care: the Pledge for America got a celebrity endorsement! More momentum for the Republican-takeover narrative! It is stunts all the way down. (Unless you are being asked for your papers on the way back to camp from picking tomatoes. That is still sincere.)
