On page 44 of the 50-page pedestrian-safety report New York City released yesterday , the Bloomberg administration presents a few legislative proposals meant to further lower the city’s already-lowish accident rate. Among the suggestions: automated traffic cameras, and lots of them.
Current state law restricts New York to only 150 red-light cameras, and bans speed cameras altogether. Red-light cameras—which have
debatable effects
on safety—could be installed at “many more” of the city’s 12,000 signal-controlled intersections, according to the report. And since the report concludes that most New Yorkers are unaware that the (mostly unposted) default speed limit is 30 mph, the speed cameras would also have plenty of opportunities to make people safe.
