China Is Investigating Possible Hormone-Tainted Milk Powder

Two years after milk adulterated with melamine caused sometimes-fatal kidney damage in Chinese children, the Xinhua News Agency reports that another dairy supplier, Synutra, is under investigation after at least three infant girls apparently began developing breasts :

The case of three infant girls’ prematurely growing breasts in Wuhan has aroused nationwide panic among parents who fed their babies the same batch of Synutra infant formula.

Medical tests proved that in those three infants the levels of two hormones - estradiol and prolactin - were far above the national standard.

What went wrong this time, and where did it happen? The Wall Street Journal writes that “Synutra has said it has been using milk powder imported from Europe and New Zealand.” The New Zealand Food Safety Authority “is seeking clarification.”
