China’s Oil Spill Beats Exxon Valdez, Still Trails BP

This month’s Dalian oil spill was not as unimpressive as China said it was, according to Greenpeace . Though the official estimate of the spill was 1,500 tons, an investigation by the environmental group concluded that the explosion and fire had destroyed a 90,000-ton tank “that had been filled shortly before the blast.”

Greenpeace’s estimate puts the spill at 60,000 to 90,000 tons—comfortably ahead of the Exxon Valdez, but only a few days’ worth of the Deepwater Horizon gusher.

But both oil spills, Deepwater and Dalian, are more or less all cleaned up now.
