Chevy Caprice Comes Back, If You’re a Police Officer

General Motors announced yesterday that it will begin taking orders in October for rear-wheel drive Chevrolet Caprice police cars, now built in Australia. The old Caprice, which was discontinued in 1996, was the big, wide, iconic cop car of the ‘90s before it gave way to the Ford Crown Victoria. Now that Ford is abandoning the Crown Victoria and offering police the front-wheel drive Taurus , Chevrolet is bringing back a Caprice to go with its front-wheel drive Impala police cars.

Unlike the Impala, there will be no American civilian version of the Caprice. Nevertheless, the first police cars on the road will be the 9C3 detective package, an unmarked, undercover version of a car that nobody but a police officer can buy.
