China Tiger-Attack Update: Zookeeper Arrested for Negligence

After a 45-year-old zoo visitor was attacked and killed inside the tiger exhibit at the Xi'an Qinling Wild Zoo last month, a zoo official initially blamed the victim for not having read the warning printed on the back of his ticket.

Now China Daily reports that a zookeeper has been arrested for dereliction of duty for failing to lock the gate to the tiger area, allowing the victim and his teenage son to mistakenly enter the vehicles-only area, where tigers roamed free. And, fine print or not, the zoo has already paid the victim's family $63,000 in compensation.

Also, in the month since the initial story, the number of tigers reportedly involved in the attack has increased from one to five.
