George Steinbrenner, 1930-2010

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, whose greedy and bullying obsession with winning was generally seen as the redeeming part of his character, died today of a heart attack.

Steinbrenner, born on the Fourth of July, was a shameless felon who was eager to entangle himself with low-life criminals, whether seedy and small-time or monstrous and big-time . He was, however, obsessed with the appearance of neatness in other people, and he prided himself on his team’s ostentatious displays of patriotism . He spent ludicrous amounts of money on ballpayers and was cruelly cheap toward rank-and-file employees.

He was a bad sport.
