Google announced today that China had renewed its license as an Internet content provider. In January, in a public showdown over China’s Internet-censoring policies, Google shut down the Chinese-approved search engine at google.cn, automatically redirecting users instead to the uncensored Hong Kong Google page .
This week, with China maintaining that the redirect was illegal, Google brought back a freestanding
google.cn page
—now with a link to the Hong Kong site. That cosmetic-seeming solution was apparently good enough for the authorities.
