Worldwide Heatwave: Beijing Reaches 109 Degrees, Russians Drown, Panda Goes on Ice

What’s new in anecdotal evidence about the state of the planet? Temperatures in Beijing earlier today reached 105 , 106 , or 109 degrees, depending on which report you read. The previous record was 98 degrees.

China Daily ran a picture of a panda lying on a block of ice in Wuhan, where the temperature was a relatively refreshing 95.

In Russia, as temperatures surpassed 98 degrees, the government reported that 285 people had drowned last week while swimming. Officials blamed “the use of alcohol” as a contributing factor.
