Show-Your-Papers Movement Reaches Indiana Drinkers

As of next month, Indiana will begin requiring identification from anyone buying carry-out alcohol , regardless of age. The Lafayette Journal-Courier reports:

Starting July 1, any licensed server selling alcohol for off-premise consumption will be required to card all Hoosiers–regardless of how old they look. That means all retailers from supermarkets to package liquor stores will be turning away customers without identification.

Anyone who fails to check for ID during a transaction can be cited with a criminal misdemeanor.

The purpose of demanding identification from even the elderly, the director of the Drug-Free Coalition of Tippecanoe County tells the paper, is to “ensure we keep alcohol out of the hands of minors.”

A liquor-store assistant manager named Jerry Mull offers the paper a prediction that could really fit into just about any story about contemporary life :

“What’s going to happen is in the beginning people will see it as a bit of a nuisance, but then it will become second nature,” he said.
