China: Pungent Fines for Garlic Profiteers

China Daily reports the latest measure by China’s National Development and Reform Commission to address the ongoing national garlic-price crisis :

Profiteers’ illicit earnings will be confiscated and they may face fines of up to one million yuan (US$146,000), the commission said in a statement posted on its website.

Even at inflated retail prices, that’s enough money to buy more than 160,000 pounds of garlic.
