To Do This Week: Rewatch Season 1 of Eastbound & Down

From time to time, a Slate staffer or critic offers up a favorite cultural pick for Procrastinate Better readers. Today’s endorsement is from Slate ‘s Dear Prudence, Emily Yoffe.

Before Season 2 of Eastbound & Down starts next Sunday on HBO at 10:30 p.m., catch up withthe first season of the hilarious, profane saga of Kenny “Fucking” Powers. The Eastbound hero is awashed-up major league baseball player who’s forced to return to his hometownand become a middle school P.E. teacher. A second viewing does not stale the enjoyment of Kenny explainingto his students that there are different kinds of lesbian gym teachers; orKenny trying to convince buxom art teacher and former flame, April, that he didnot come in his pants when they embraced; or Kenny reciting along to the tapeof his motivational book, You’re Fucking Out, I’m Fucking In . Kenny is asubstance-abusing, steroid-injecting, politically incorrect sexist, and playedby co-creator of the series, Danny McBride, one of the funniest characters ontelevision.
