Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara Make the Repressive 1950s Look Crazy Sexy

Writing in Slate in 2006, Terry Castle said The Price of Salt’s “pulp-fiction plotting, ‘50s paranoia, and heavy doses of authorial cynicism combined, somehow miraculously, to produce a louche and stunningly erotic McCarthy-era love story.” Judging from the newly released trailer for Carol, the Todd Haynes movie adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel, from a script by Phyllis Nagy, reflects the book’s tamped-down but highly combustible sensuality.

Stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara appear to have captured the 1950s world of meaningful glances and casual touches, the longing of a young department store clerk for a poised married customer, and concern that their romance is being monitored by unseen forces.

Carol, which won the Queer Palm award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, will open Nov. 20.
