Jeffrey Tambor Dedicates His Golden Globe to the Transgender Community

“This is so big. This is much bigger than me,” began Jeffrey Tambor when he accepted the Golden Globe for best actor in a TV series, comedy or musical, Sunday night. Tambor thanked Jill Soloway, the creator of Transparent, which, earlier in the evening won the award for best television series, musical or comedy, “for the gift and … the responsibility of Maura Pfefferman of Pacific Palisades.”

Last year at the Globes, Jared Leto earned criticism for what Outward’s J. Bryan Lowder described as a “juvenile and self-centered” acceptance speech after he won an award for his portrayal of a trans woman in Dallas Buyer’s Club. Tambor’s comments were a study in contrast. “Rhys Ernst, Zackary Drucker, and Jenny Boylan,” he said, naming three of the trans artists on Transparent’s creative team, “thank you, you led me through the steps to find more of Jeffrey than I’ve ever known in my entire life.”

He ended by dedicating his performance and the award to “the transgender community. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for your courage. Thank you for your inspiration. Thank you for your patience. And thank you for letting us be part of the change.”
