Here's What Families With Kids Look Like Today

The Census Bureau updated its look at families with children under eighteen today. Here's a snapshot:

What really stands out is that among college graduates, the traditional family is supreme. Of parents with at least a bachelor's degree about 88 percent have a married partner living with them. Among people who don't have a college degree, both cohabitation and single parenting are much more common. And yet it seems relativley unlikely that college education per se causes this divergence in family status. That's something to keep in mind whenever you see data bout the divergent fates of college grads and non-college Americans—the underlying demographics are quite different in ways that are probably only incidentally related to the actual education that happens at America's universities.
