In the era of #humblebrags there’s something refreshing about a good old-fashioned brag, and here’s a heck of a brag from Univision about beating CBS, ABC, Fox, and NBC in the ratings:
If you read the fine print, you’ll see that they actually weren’t No. 1 overall, just No. 1 in “the demo” of prime-age adults, which is prized by networks and advertisers for business reasons. The demo really is a huge thing in the TV business, but as long as we’re talking advertising strategy rather than viewership aggregates, I’d imagine the Spanish-dominant and English-dominant audiences are pretty segmented anyway, so it’s not clear that this is meaningful competition in a business sense. But there’s no need to be churlish: This really is a huge achievement for Univision and a sign of the changing face of both the United States (bigger audience for Spanish-language TV) and of television (audience fragmentation killing once-dominant networks).
