In other words, one major advantage Texas has to offer over coastal metropolitan areas is that ample land and sprawl-friendly policies make the houses cheap, bolstering real living standards. Most coastal cities simply can't sprawl their way to prosperity as a matter of geography, but could increase the affordability of their housing with density-friendly zoning that would allow them to use the cutting-edge technology of the elevator to overcome land scarcity.
