PC Sales Are Collapsing

Sales of PCs have been falling lately, but IDG says the most recent quarter was the worst on record with sales falling 13.9 percent.

The interesting question is how much of this is a structural shift toward slower replacement cycles and more tablets versus how much is people disliking Windows 8. To really know what’s up, we’re going to need to see how Mac sales compare to the industry as a whole. But either way, it suggests that Microsoft’s efforts to move into the mobile space aren’t succeeding at nearly the kind of pace the company needs to replace declining shipments of Windows PCs.
