A quick note on the Wisconsin Senate race which—like Connecticut—has a Democrat replacing another Democrat but will make the Senate substantially more liberal. Herb Kohl who's retiring was right in the middle of the Senate Democratic pack ideologically.

Tammy Baldwin, by contrast, is one of the most liberal members of the more-liberal Democratic caucus in the House of Representatives. The result is a more dramatic and consequential ideological shift as well a symbolically important one that will give America its first openly gay Senator.
