Marissa Mayer Taking Over Troubled Yahoo

In a surprise move, the revolving door at Yahoo has landed on Marissa Mayer*, Google’s vice president of location and local services, who will be the new CEO of the storied-but-troubled Web giant.

Obviously the gender angle here is interesting as we have few prominent women in executive roles in Silicon Valley. But it’s also interesting as a strategic move for Yahoo. Like AOL, Yahoo’s been sort of halfway between a tech company and a media company for a while, and in its recent incarnations has mostly acted like a media company. Mayer, by contrast, seems much more like a tech hire.
