Some ideas are crazy and, as the saying goes, some ideas are just crazy enough to work. It’s unclear which category a Tetris movie would fall into, but we’re all going to find out.

Threshold Entertainment and the Tetris Co. are working together on a live-action movie version of the classic ’80s video game. No one has signed on to direct yet, but the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that there is a story ready to go. A story.

Threshold CEO Larry Kasanoff told WSJ that, “It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie.” For those worrying about the, ahem, aesthetics of the project he added that, “We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”

In 1995 Kasanoff pulled something similar off with Mortal Kombat and its 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Both movies grossed millions.

During WSJ’s interview with Kasanoff, he said that if the Tetris movie does well, “We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness.” Who knows exactly what that means. He also noted, “ ‘Tetris’ is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance.”

This is certainly going to be … something. Hopefully it will at least be better than Battleship.
