Let’s get something out of the way up front: Tove Lo’s “Disco Tits” is a great song. Like so many other songs by the Swedish pop star—including “Habits,” “Talking Body,” and “Cool Girl”—it’s a song about sex and drugs, with raunchy lyrics like “I’m sweating from head to toe/ I’m wet through all my clothes/ I’m fully charged, nipples are hard/ Ready to go.” True to its title, “Disco Tits” has a more retro sound than we’re used to from Tove Lo, and it works for her.
The video for “Disco Tits,” on the other hand, is a roller coaster of bizarre, inexplicable choices. It opens with Tove Lo doing an interview to promote her upcoming album, Blue Lips. Her interviewer is what looks like an off-brand Muppet, with yellow fur and bulging eyes. “If you could pick any flavor you want, would you still choose vanilla?” she asks him.
Reader, there’s no way to sugarcoat this: Tove Lo does sex stuff with this puppet. She kisses its gaping puppet mouth. It gives her road head. The two of them take some drugs, and the puppet motorboats her. It’s all very strange.
There are brief flashes where the puppet ceases to be a puppet altogether and becomes a real boy. This only makes the entire scenario more puzzling. Is this long-haired man in a tank top the puppet’s true form? Why is he unable to sustain it for more than a second or two at a time? Does only Tove Lo see him as a Muppet, or is everyone aware of what’s going on? Honestly, not having any barbecue sauce to put on his diner fries seems like it should be the least of his worries.
