John Oliver Introduces the Solution to Britain’s Brexit Woes: Lord Buckethead

The U.K. has until March 2019 to negotiate the terms of its withdrawal from the European Union, but that may be easier said than done: Prime Minister Theresa May’s recent snap election, which she called in an effort to strengthen the Conservative majority in Parliament, backfired rather spectacularly, weakening her position at the Brexit bargaining table. John Oliver dedicated the bulk of Sunday’s Last Week Tonight to checking in on how Brexit is going, breaking down the many issues the country must decide on, including what kind of trade agreements and border laws it will keep after its departure.

For all the oddball cheese-themed British press coverage the issue has been receiving, the U.K. is facing a serious issue, and for that it’ll need a serious negotiator. Fortunately, Oliver knows just the man for the job: Lord Buckethead, the joke candidate who recently won 249 votes while running against May in her own district of Maidenhead. This intergalactic space lord—whose Twitter bio suggests that he enjoys “planet-conquering, dominating inferior species, and Lovejoy”—campaigned on a platform of planetwide domination, but he also challenged May over her lack specificity about Brexit. That, plus the whole bucket-on-the-head schtick, won him enough respect for Oliver to actually fly him over to appear on Last Week Tonight.

Underneath that bucket head of his, the political icon seemed enthusiastic about making his American television debut:

Although I must point out, that’s exactly what someone who had obliterated John Oliver with a laser would say.
