For those dying to know exactly what Lana Del Rey thinks of Coachella, look no further than her new song—or even just its title. “Coachella—Woodstock in My Mind” was written after the the pop star attended the music festival last month, which compelled her to take “a moment to sit down by the sequoia grove and write a little song.” The resulting track is another moody effort from Del Rey, one that wrestles with her conflicting feelings about Coachella.
“I guess I was in it ’cause, baby, for a minute/ It was Woodstock in my mind,” she begins, using the song’s title as an opening frame. “What about all these children?/ And what about all their parents?/ And what about all their crowns they wear in hair so long like mine?” “Coachella” features a typically detached vibe from Del Rey, even as in its lyrics it asks more pressing questions, sharply juxtaposing the trappings of “fame” and “fortune” with surrounding crises. As she said of the song’s inspiration in a previous Instagram tease, “I had complex feelings about spending the weekend dancing whilst watching tensions [with] North Korea mount.”
The song is expected to be on Del Rey’s upcoming Lust for Life, along with “Love” and “Lust for Life,” which features the Weeknd. It drops May 26.
