It’s impossible to keep up with the Trump news cycle, and Seth Meyers couldn’t have anticipated that, in the early morning to follow his newest episode of Late Night, the president would all but admit to lying about the circumstances of FBI Director James Comey’s firing. But in this case, at least, Meyers’ analysis of the ever-worsening scandal still holds up. “Trump’s ego is so huge he can’t even let somebody else have the spotlight in his alibi!” he explained, citing Trump’s contradictory admission that he was planning to fire Comey all week. “He’s like a Scooby-Doo villain: That’s right, it was me! I was the ghost in the amusement park!” We aren’t exactly short on Trump insults nowadays, but props to Meyers: “Scooby-Doo villain” is a pretty apt description of where we are at this point.
Trump has a curious strategy of trying to outwit the press—as reporting continues to contradict the administration or simply place it in increasingly unsettling lights, officials have been left playing a bad game of catch-up. In Meyers’ view, the most significant detail to leak out in recent days is that Comey once referred to Trump as not just abnormal, but “crazy.” “I like how Comey started with a more flowery term and then just settled on crazy,” Meyers joked. “You see, the president doesn’t have all his wits about him, he’s not exactly playing with a full deck, he’s one banana short of a smoothie. … I guess what I’m saying is, my dude is cray.”
Whether or not Comey actually said this could soon be revealed if the president follows through on his threat to leak private conversations with his former FBI director to prove something that is almost certainly false. Time will tell!
