It Comes at Night Looks Like Another Great Film From Trey Edward Shults, a Major New Filmmaker

Trey Edward Shults emerged as a major new talent last year, netting awards from Film Independent, the National Board of Review, and various regional critics’ groups for his acclaimed debut feature Krisha. It should come as very good news, then, that the director is showing no signs of slowing down. His eerie new film It Comes at Night, produced and distributed by indie king A24, debuted over the weekend at the Overlook Film Festival, and once again has critics raving. Early reviews from the likes of Uproxx, IndieWire, and Time Out indicate that this could emerge as one of the best movies of the year.

The post-apocalyptic It Comes at Night stars Joel Edgerton (Loving) as the patriarch of a family endangered by an unnatural threat terrorizing the world. He imposes a strict domestic order that quickly unravels, as another family—headed by the great Christopher Abbott (James White)—comes seeking refuge and the outside danger gets closer. IndieWire’s Eric Kohn described the film as “Krisha with a sci-fi twist”—and if you haven’t watched the terrific Krisha, a spare domestic drama reimagined as psychological thriller, you should really get on that—and this compelling first trailer perfectly teases that combination of mystery, family tension, and terror.

It Comes at Night hits theaters June 9.
