Following in the footsteps of her August: Osage County co-star Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts is headed to the small screen for an ambitious adaptation of a celebrated new novel. Roberts has signed on to star in a limited TV series based on Today Will Be Different, the latest book from Maria Semple (and a very funny one at that) which centers on a woman forced to confront the mess of her life over one very long day.
The project has been spearheaded by Megan Ellison and her new TV initiative, formulated under her Annapurna production banner. Ellison is known for her work behind many acclaimed films of the last few years, including Spike Jonze’s Her and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, as well as her ongoing collaboration with David O. Russell. She recently partnered with Russell on his upcoming TV series, which stars Julianne Moore and Robert de Niro and sold to Amazon for a remarkable $160 million.
Roberts previously earned an Emmy nomination for her role in HBO’s The Normal Heart, but this project will mark her first-ever series regular role. No network is yet attached to it, but with Roberts and Ellison both on board, expect the bidding wars to commence momentarily.
