Fences, Manchester by the Sea, and People v. O.J. Simpson Lead SAG Awards Nominations

Manchester by the Sea

Roadside Attractions

Since 2004, every male lead actor who has won the Screen Actors Guild Award has gone on to win the Best Actor Academy Award that season. Since 2003, all but three SAG female lead actor winners have gone on to win the Best Actress Academy Award that season. And so with this year’s crop of just-announced nominees, it’s safe to say that we’ve got a good look at what some of the Oscar acting nominees will look like next month.

Among the safe bets are Casey Affleck, Mahershala Ali, Natalie Portman, and Viola Davis, actors who have all heard their name announced repeatedly as the awards season has progressed. Meryl Streep’s nod for Florence Foster Jenkins is not so surprising considering how much everyone adores her—though Emily Blunt for the panned Girl on a Train might be, especially considering Isabelle Huppert’s buzzed-about performance in Elle didn’t make the cut.

A few bright spots on the TV side of things: The People v. O.J. Simpson dominating several categories, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin being recognized for their excellent performances in Grace and Frankie, and Tituss Burgess for being the continuously being the best part of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Check out the rest of the nominees, below.
