The Los Angeles Film Critics Association held its annual meeting to vote on its achievement awards for 2016 on Sunday, announcing the winners on Twitter as they were chosen. Barry Jenkins’ coming-of-age drama Moonlight won in four categories: Best Picture, Best Director (Barry Jenkins), Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), and Best Cinematography (James Laxton). The wins come three days after the New York Film Critics Circle gave Moonlight awards for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Cinematography, while giving Best Picture to La La Land. The only other film to win more than one award in Los Angeles was The Handmaiden, which won Best Foreign Language Film and Best Production Design (Ryo Seong-hee). Isabelle Huppert won Best Actress for two roles, in Elle and Things To Come, while Adam Driver won Best Actor for Paterson. Best Supporting Actress went to Lily Gladstone for Certain Women.
Unlike many awards, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association also announces the runners-up, which give more insight into how the voting went. Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, for example, didn’t win a single award after three wins in New York—but it was the runner-up in three categories, losing Best Actor to Paterson, Best Supporting Actress to Certain Women, and Best Screenplay to The Lobster. Meanwhile, La La Land, which won Best Picture—but nothing else—in New York, was everyone’s second choice in Los Angeles. While it only won Best Music Score, it was the runner-up in five categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Production Design.
