Vanessa Bayer showed up on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update this week as Rachel from Friends, ostensibly to talk about a wave of ’90s nostalgia exemplified, for some reason, by the return of Full House, which premiered in 1987, and Gilmore Girls, which premiered in 2000. The shoddy chronology doesn’t much matter, however, because Bayer was really only there for the fun of wearing a Rachel wig and overalls. And really really, she was only there to give Jennifer Aniston—starring with Bayer in the upcoming low-concept film Office Christmas Party—a reason to have a surprise cameo.
But the crass commercialism doesn’t matter any more than the premiere date of Full House, because Bayer’s Rachel is a delight, as is her ability to summon Friends interstitials out of thin air. Not surprisingly, it’s a little less fun for Aniston, though: Who wants to be confronted with their haircut from 20 years ago?
