On Tuesday, as the government began starving and freezing the Dakota Access Pipeline protestors and Donald Trump continued appointing generals for his war on women, the poor, and Mitt Romney’s dignity, Hillary Clinton made one of her first public appearances since the election, visiting the UNICEF Snowflake Ball to honor Katy Perry. According to Deadline, Clinton’s appearance was a surprise that earned her a standing ovation and moved Perry to tears.
Perry was this year’s recipient of the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award for her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She was also one of Clinton’s highest-profile supporters, performing at the Democratic National Convention and at get-out-the-vote concerts for Clinton’s celebrity-heavy campaign. “Hillary has lit that voice inside of me, and that light will never go out. It will continue to get brighter and brighter and brighter,” Perry said while accepting the award. “We need champions like Katy, now more than ever,” Clinton, who has kept a low profile since the election, told the audience.
The Snowflake Ball, an annual black-tie gala to benefit UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, was held this year at Cipriani Wall Street in New York after cocktails at the Museum of American Finance. Tickets to the gala, which was hosted by Octavia Spencer and featured a musical performance from Sara Bareilles, started at $2,500 for individuals; “Humanitarian” packages, including two tables for 10, went for $100,000.
