It’s been a week since Solange’s terrific A Seat at the Table dropped on Apple Music, giving listeners plenty of time to absorb the album’s confident sound and powerful messages. But for those interested in digging a little deeper, the singer-songwriter has just released a short documentary via YouTube that goes into the “beginning stages” of the album’s making.
“Beginning Stages” weaves between jam sessions and other creative collaborations in Long Island, New York; New Orleans; and New Iberia, Louisiana. It’s a free-wheeling, rhythmic glimpse into Solange’s process, observing how she takes in sounds and ideas and starts to realize their musical potential. And intriguingly, not everything tried out here ends up on the final album. In that sense, the experimentation and exploration at this doc’s center provides a fascinating and honest portrait of an artist at work.
