The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng Went to Chinatown, Delivered the Perfect Corrective to Fox News’ Racist Segment

Fox News took quite a bit of heat for a segment of “Watters’ World” that aired on The O’Reilly Factor Monday night, in which correspondent Jesse Watters ambushed Asian Americans in Chinatown on the (very flimsy) premise of asking about China’s relevance in the first presidential debate. The segment, which instead featured Watters asking interviewees questions like, “Am I supposed to bow to say hello?” intercut with clips of The Karate Kid and Chinatown, was, unsurprisingly, not well-received. (Neither was Watters’ nonapology and explanation that he is “a political humorist.”)

As it turns out, The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng was among the many who weren’t amused by Watters’ particular brand of humor. On Thursday night, Chieng dissected the many problems with the Chinatown segment by actually doing what Watters said he was trying to: asking Asian Americans their thoughts on the election. And while Chieng was there, he asked what they think of Jesse Watters, too.
