The Trailer for Patriots Day Offers a Sobering Reminder of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings

Coming only a few weeks after the release of Deepwater Horizon, the action-packed retelling of the 2010 BP oil spill, the first trailer for Patriots Day has arrived, with director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg re-teaming to take on yet another dark day from the Obama era. This film, however, arrives even sooner after the tragedy it’s depicting: the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.

Wahlberg, a Boston native, stars as Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders, who leads the citywide manhunt that follows the devastating explosions that left three dead and over 200 injured. The strong supporting cast includes John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, Michelle Monaghan—who, as Tommy’s wife Carol, appears to be putting on a heavy Bahston accent—and Kevin Bacon. Most intriguingly, Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are on music composition duties, the first time the duo has gotten behind a narrative feature film not directed by David Fincher. (In a tease of how they’ll be scoring this movie, the trailer ends with an ominous, plinking cover of “America the Beautiful.”)

Patriots Day will open in limited release on Dec. 21 before going wide on Jan. 13.
