Michel Gondry’s New Video for the White Stripes Is an Inspiration to Shower Doodlers Everywhere

The previously unreleased White Stripes song “City Lights” came out on Friday as part of Jack White’s new stripped-down, acoustic collection, which compiles the lead singer and guitarist’s recordings from 1998 to today. Now, the song has an equally stripped-down video, from acclaimed music video director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), in which a hidden artist doodles on a steamy shower door, with the drawings overlapping and fading away as each new image is finger-traced onto the glass. It’s a simple concept, but it’s oddly compelling to watch.

According to the video’s description, Gondry filmed the quirky video “without anyone’s knowledge” and sent it to the band as a surprise. The White Stripes and Gondry have collaborated previously on a number of well-received videos, including “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,” “Fell In Love With a Girl,” “The Hardest Button To Button,” and “The Denial Twist.”
