The Soulful New Trailer for Cannes Hit American Honey Dares Millennials to Dream

The soulful new trailer for Andrea Arnold’s award-winning American Honey makes an unusually direct pitch to millennials, presenting a gritty but dreamlike film in its depiction of a young woman journeying the American heartland. And it’s certainly got the credentials to back that message up: American Honey won the Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being distributed by A24, which has as good a track record as any independent company out there right now.

In American Honey—which runs at a luxurious 162 minutes—teenager Star (Sasha Lane) joins a traveling magazine crew, crisscrossing the midwest as she encounters the riskiness of law-bending, the thrills (and limitations) of hard partying, and the joys of young love (with Shia LaBeouf, no less). Set for a Sept. 30 release, the film is sure to be one of the year’s most ambitious movies, and in the hands of Arnold—whose filmography also includes episodes of Transparent and the Cannes-winning Red Road—it might just prove to be one of the best, too.
