Joss Whedon’s Beloved Firefly Is Finally Back (as a Fan-Made, Animated Trailer)

I am a leaf on the wind, indeed.

Still taken from the teaser

Joss Whedon’s beloved space Western Firefly was canceled more than a decade ago after just one season, but don’t tell that to Browncoats, the rabidly loyal fans of the show who refuse to let it die. Their dedication has brought us the Serenity movie and a comic miniseries, and now that same adoration has resurrected the short-lived series once again … as a fan-made animated teaser. (C’mon, you knew it was too good to be true.)

Still, this teaser, for a proposed animated Firefly series, is impressive in its ambition—just look how much work it took animator Stephen Byrne to make even a single shot. All of the characters seem to be present, and it looks like Byrne even resurrects two beloved ones who were heartlessly killed off in Serenity, although Wash seems to appear via hologram rather than in person.

The teaser may only be a flight of fancy, but there’s no denying that the interest for Firefly is still very much alive—this fan film from just two years ago is proof enough of that—and an animated series would be a fresh take. Not to mention, the cast is willing.

Your move, Whedon.
