Amy Adams Tries to Save the World in the Full-Length Trailer for Arrival

Paramount Pictures continues to build suspense for the release of Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sci-fi effort Arrival. After dropping an ominous teaser a week ago, the distributor has now premiered a full-length trailer for the film, continuing to highlight star Amy Adams while also giving supporting players Forest Whitaker and Jeremy Renner a chance to shine.

Arrival is based on the short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang and centers on the global fallout of a mysterious spacecraft touching down on Earth. To investigate, a special team consisting of a language expert (Adams), a mathematician (Renner), and an Army colonel (Whitaker) is assembled. However, the conspiracy deepens as the rest of the world panics, leaving the team to find answers and put their lives—not to mention the entirety of humankind—on the line.

Fresh off of the acclaimed Sicario, Villeneuve is back to compete in the meat of awards season this year, with Arrival set to premiere on Sept. 1 at the Venice Film Festival before its theatrical bow on Nov. 11. But the film also represents the first substantial on-screen role for Adams in years—especially notable since her most recent major film, Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, was considered a creative disappointment. So pay attention to Arrival: This could mark one of our last chances to catch Adams in a prime feature-length part like this, with the allure of premium cable on the verge of snagging her away.
