Is Trump Being Sarcastic? John Oliver Explains Why It’s So Hard to Tell

Donald Trump has had quite a week: First, he suggested that “Second Amendment people” could stop his opponent Hillary Clinton. Then, Trump called President Obama “the founder of ISIS” (and, for good measure, called Clinton the co-founder). Finally, he suggested that the only way he could lose Pennsylvania, a state in which Clinton leads him by several points, would be if someone cheats. Well, John Oliver, unsurprisingly, is not having any of it.

Oliver just can’t get over Trump’s totally contradictory statements about the tone of his own statements. First, Trump defended his ISIS comment as sarcastic. But then, he decided that it wasn’t that sarcastic after all. “You know that riddle where there are two people, one who always lies and one who always tells the truth?” asked Oliver. “Donald Trump is both of those at once!”

But there’s more at stake, warns Oliver, than a Knights and Knaves riddle. Last Week Tonight staff signed up for Trump’s Election Observer form on his website and received an email from the campaign saying, “We are going to do everything we are legally allowed to do to stop crooked Hillary from rigging this election.” And since Trump doesn’t seem to have a great idea of what legally means, that’s troubling. But it probably won’t matter by next week, when Trump decides that was sarcasm too.
