The First Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk Is Here, and the Movie Looks Massive

Few filmmakers are better than Christopher Nolan at conveying a sense of scale. Picture Paris bending over on itself in Inception, or the wave in Interstellar that’s so big that it looks like the sky itself is closing in. It’s that sense of scale that’s the focus of the “announcement teaser” for Nolan’s next movie, but for the first time Nolan will use it to depict a real-life historical event.

In Dunkirk, Nolan will turn his eye on perhaps the largest-scale event in human history, World War II, and one of the largest evacuations: Operation Dynamo, in which more than 300,000 French and British troops were saved in what’s now called “the Miracle of Dunkirk.”

We don’t know much else about the movie, except that it will feature Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, and Kenneth Branagh, along with another score from Hans Zimmer and cinematography from Interstellar’s Hoyte van Hoytema. And it will come out in summer 2017.

But whatever you think of Nolan, no one else gets to make original movies on this scale anymore, and that will make this one to look out for.
