HBO’s New Head of Programming Threatens to Develop True Detective Season 3

Detectives Hart and Cohle try to discover who has kidnapped the cultural conversation.

HBO

HBO’s new head of programming Casey Bloys was asked at Saturday’s Television Critics Association press tour about the status of True Detective, and his answer, as reported by Deadline, was positively bone-chilling:

It’s not dead. We are hoping for a third season. It’s a very valuable franchise for us.

It was widely believed that the show, created by Nic Pizzolatto, had been put out of its misery after its disappointing, convoluted second season. It’s horrifying to discover that all this time, Bloys had been keeping True Detective alive, locked n a basement, feeding it little bits of overwrought dialogue like, for instance, Vince Vaughn’s Season 2 story about being locked in a basement.

But there are flickers of light in the all-consuming darkness. If the show comes back, Pizzolatto is likely to supervise rather than write, as he is working on another project for HBO. And there still may be time for us to save ourselves. “I’m not sure we have the right take yet,” the head of programming told the assembled critics. So far, Bloys has released no demands and his motives remain mysterious.
