Dan Harmon’s New Animated Show Looks Like an Excuse to Play Dungeons & Dragons With His Famous Friends

Dan Harmon loves role-playing games: HarmonQuest, his new show available online today, revolves entirely around the Community creator and his famous friends playing RPG Pathfinder in front of a live audience. Adapted from a segment on his podcast Harmontown, the show features Harmon and co. onstage improvising while their dialogue is animated to show their characters’ adventures in the Pathfinder realm.

It may not sound terribly exciting, but Harmon knows how to raise the stakes on a roleplaying game. “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons,” the first of Community’s two D&D–themed episodes, was one of the most compelling episodes in the entire series, and it was working with even less than HarmonQuest—the players never leave the table, and their adventures are communicated entirely through narration and sound effects.

It also helps that some very funny people are on board for Harmon’s new show: Jeff Davis, Erin McGathy, and Spencer Crittenden (who serves as gamemaster) are all regulars, while guests including Aubrey Plaza, Chelsea Peretti, and Paul F. Tompkins, pop in on different episodes. All 10 episodes of HarmonQuest are available to stream online today on NBC Seeso.
