Sarah Silverman had a brush with death last week, The Wrap reports. The comedian posted the details on her Facebook page by way of thanking her friends and doctors and explaining her recent absence. A trip to the doctor for a sore throat turned out to be epiglottitis, a swelling of the epiglottis that qualifies as a medical emergency, since it can completely obstruct breathing and cause suffocation. She spent the next week in the intensive care unit in an anesthetic haze with a breathing tube in, unsure what was happening to her. But having survived the ordeal, Silverman is experiencing a sort of existential freedom:

[I] spent the first two days home kind of free-falling from the meds / lack of meds and the paralyzing realization that nothing matters. Luckily that was followed by the motivating revelation that nothing matters.

Philosophical discoveries aside, Silverman seems to have come through with her spirit intact: Given pencil and paper to communicate, she flagged a nurse down to give her an important note with a drawing of a penis on it.
