Last week at #Ham4Ham, he taught them how to say goodbye, and now it’s Lin-Manuel Miranda’s turn: This week is the star’s last as Alexander Hamilton. At his final show outside the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Wednesday (at least as a cast member), Miranda, wearing a “One Last Time” shirt, reflected on the origins of #Ham4Ham, recalling the spontaneous address he gave to the crowd of 700 people at the very first Hamilton lottery to a crowd that now, from the sound of it, was just as enthusiastic.

Miranda marked the occasion by reading a characteristically long-winded letter from the real Alexander Hamilton to his wife, Eliza, in 1780. “It kind of captures everything I love about Hamilton,” he told the audience. “He’s kind of arrogant, he’s kind of insecure, he’s unbelievably romantic. It’s funny, it’s sad.” It’s a letter that touches on the couple’s potential poverty, the echoes of which can be heard in the musical itself: “Will you relish being a poor man’s wife?/ Unable to provide for your life?

Hamilton’s own Eliza then made an appearance: Phillipa Soo, along with Leslie Odom Jr., came out for a goodbye singalong of “Happy Trails,” as has become the tradition for departing cast and crew. Like Miranda, Soo and Odom will give their last performance on Saturday, their replacements having been announced earlier today.
