One of the highlights of this season of Game of Thrones was the climactic Battle of the Bastards, which managed to convey both the big picture of the battle and the intimacy of up-close clashes. We’ve already seen a tactical breakdown of how this was choreographed, but a new video from Iloura now shows us the technical side of the battle, peeling back the layers of visual effects to show how every element—from the huge clashes of soldiers and horses to each soaring arrow—was rendered.
Game of Thrones’ visual effects have always been stunning, but even Steve Kullback, the show’s VFX producer, had a difficult time telling what was real in the Battle of the Bastards: “We constantly needed to review Iloura’s shots side by side with the photography because it was hard to remember and even harder to see the difference between what was shot and what was added.”
