This fall, students at the University of Texas at Austin will have the chance to just keep L-E-A-R-N-I-N from none other than Academy Award winner and Nietzschean philsopher Matthew McConaughey. According to the university, the actor is set to co-lead a filmmaking class that will admit 30 upper-level students and feature recorded instructional videos as well as at least one in-person visit from the actor.
McConaughey, who also calls Austin his home, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Radio-Television-Film from the university in 1993. He will co-teach the class with director Gary Ross, with whom he collaborated on the newly released historical drama Free State of Jones. Ross has been nominated for four Academy Awards, with additional directorial credits including Seabiscuit and The Hunger Games. In an interview with MySA.com, Lauren Phillips—public affairs representative for the university’s Moody College of Communications—said that McConaughey and Ross plan to take students “behind the scenes” of their new film. Though only juniors and seniors will be considered, no prerequisites or additional fees are required to take the class.
