Bob Dylan Talks Carnival Life and Performing for Cheeseburgers in This Animated Interview from 1962

A rare interview with 20-year-old Bob Dylan is the focus of the newest episode of PBS’s animated series Blank on Blank, touching on Dylan’s harmonica habits, playing the guitar in exchange for cheeseburgers, and his upcoming debut album with Columbia Records.

In between smoking a cigarette and tuning his instrument, he talked with the Folksingers Choice radio program on New York City’s WBAI FM about how his time working at a carnival influenced his early music. Speaking of a burn victim who was part of the freak show, he said, “They want to make you think that they don’t feel bad about themselves, and also they want to make you feel sorry for them. I always liked that, and I wrote a song for her called ‘Won’t You Buy a Postcard.’ I can’t remember that one, though.”

There’s a lovely moment toward the end of the clip when Dylan is asked whether he will still wear his iconic hat when he becomes rich and famous. Dylan replies, “Oh, I’m never going to become rich and famous.”
